January marks Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating our community about one of the leading causes of preventable vision loss. Often called “the silent thief of sight”, Glaucoma often develops with no noticeable pain, vision changes, or symptoms.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve, the structure that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. This damage leads to permanent vision loss if not detected and treated early. Once vision is lost, it can’t be restored, making early detection with routine eye examinations of the utmost importance.

There are a number of risk factors for glaucoma to be aware of, including:
- Family history of glaucoma
- Age 40 and older
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Long-term steroid use
- History of eye injury

At Davison Road Optical we use the most advanced technology to diagnose and treat glaucoma. While there currently is no cure for glaucoma, treatment options such as prescription eye drops, laser therapy, or surgical procedures can help lower eye pressure to prevent further vision loss. Early treatment is key to preserving long-term sight and eye health.

January is the perfect time to prioritize your eye health. Protecting your vision starts with awareness and early detection. If it’s been over a year since your last eye exam, or if you have any of the above risk factors for glaucoma, schedule a comprehensive exam with us.
